BiteSum Privacy Policy

Last updated: 17 June 2026

BiteSum is operated by [YOUR NAME / TRADING NAME], an independent app developer based in Australia. We built BiteSum to be private by default. This policy explains what data the app handles and what data can leave your device.

The Short Version

No account is required. Your food log lives on your phone. We do not run ads, use advertising trackers, or sell your data. Data leaves your device only in the limited situations described below.

What Stays On Your Device

Your everyday BiteSum data is kept locally on your phone using on-device storage. This includes food entries, corrections, daily totals, custom foods, saved meals, goals, targets, preferences, and an anonymous local install identifier used only to label a support report if you choose to send one.

We cannot see this local data during normal use. If you delete the app, this data is removed from your device.

Diagnostic Reports

If you contact support and choose to send an in-app diagnostic report, the app uploads that report only when you tap to send it. The report may include diagnostics, app version, device and OS details, your anonymous install code, and recent app data needed to reproduce a problem. It is used only to help fix the issue.

App Update Checks

The app may periodically check whether a newer version is available by requesting a small public version file from our update host. This does not send your food data or personal information. Your IP address may be visible to the host as part of a normal internet request.

Voice Logging

If you use voice to log food, your spoken audio is transcribed by your phone's built-in speech recognition, provided by Apple on iOS or Google on Android. Depending on your device and language, this may be processed on-device or on the platform provider's servers under their privacy policies. BiteSum receives only the resulting text and does not store or transmit your audio.

Optional Cloud Guidance

BiteSum includes an optional cloud guidance feature that helps with foods the app cannot confidently estimate on its own. When it is on and the app needs help with an entry, BiteSum sends the short food text you are getting help with, limited non-identifying context such as locale and diet style, and your anonymous install code to our guidance service hosted in Australia.

To protect the service from abuse, the app first obtains a short-lived session token for your device. We use your request only to return a nutrition estimate. We do not require an account, build a profile of you, use the data for advertising, or keep a long-term diary of your food. Requests are retained only as needed for short-term operation, caching for accuracy, and abuse or cost protection. You can turn cloud guidance off at any time.

Payments and Subscriptions

If you buy BiteSum Pro, the purchase is handled by Apple or Google. We never see your card details. We receive only the purchase or entitlement confirmation needed to unlock Pro features.

What We Do Not Do

We do not require or collect your name, email, phone number, or address to use the app. We do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs that track you across apps. We do not sell, rent, or trade your data. We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or health records from other apps.

Children

BiteSum is not directed at children under 13, or the equivalent minimum age in your country. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Your Choices and Rights

You can stop optional uploads by not using diagnostic reports, keeping cloud guidance off, and not using voice logging. Deleting the app removes your on-device data. For any support report you sent us, you can request deletion by emailing us. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access or delete data we hold.

Changes

If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and change the last updated date.
